Too cool not to share – illustrated “Imagine”

This is not my typical post. I received it tonight via email from my wonderful friend, Babara Chavarria – and my immediate instinct was to share it. Notice the partnership – illustrator Pablo Stanley and legendary songwriter and artist John Lennon.

I suppose the lesson, if you must draw one, is to find a partner to help you express yourself in a new, unusual, or unexpected way. Such a creation could be an excellent way to increase your reach by touching a segment of the public that warms to your message even though they wouldn’t find you through your typical channels.

Marketing reminders from a banana, a penguin, and some wet dogs

I was on my way to meet a friend for coffee yesterday morning when I saw something you don’t see every day. On one side of the street, a person in a penguin costume was holding a sign: DOG WASH. Then I noticed a guy in a banana suit holding a similar sign across the street. Wow!

Now I’ve been to my share of carwash fundraisers – even held a few in my younger years. I’ve also been to a Doggie Beach Party fundraiser, replete with “Best Bathing Suit” and “Best Body” awards. But I’d never seen a dog wash fundraiser. It was unexpected – but even more unexpected were the costumed advertisers. I think the dog wash was being put on by a church youth group trying to raise money for an upcoming trip. The why didn’t much matter to me, only that it kept me smiling for the rest of the morning.

I had a full day ahead of me, so I didn’t have a chance to run my three mutts through the dog wash fundraiser, but there are still some basic, basic marketing lessons to take from this:

  1. Do something unexpected.
  2. Do it boldly, where lots of people can see you.
  3. Have a goal.
  4. Get your friends involved.
  5. Make it fun.
  6. Determine how you’ll know if you’ve met your goal.
  7. Thank everyone who helped you.

Like raising money, marketing doesn’t have to be complicated or highly technical. It has to get people’s attention, make them smile and remember you, and help you create a lasting relationship.

Here’s to all the clean dogs out there!
